The goal of this course is to learn about the Hanyu-mura Possession Incident as described in 〈i〉Shiryo gedatsu Monogatari kikigaki〈/i〉 and to deepen understanding of the society, religion, and customs of the Edo period as depicted in the work. The course also aims to understand the intention behind the publication of 〈i〉Shiryo gedatsu Monogatari kikigaki〈/i〉 .
This section focuses on one of Japan's three great ghost stories, “Kasane”.
It is said that 〈i〉Shiryo gedatsu Monogatari kikigaki〈/i〉(The Tale of Unraveling the Spirits of the Dead), which describes the possession of Kasane and Suke the removal of the spirits by Yuten Shonin, is a book that records an actual incident in Hanyu Village in Shimousa Province. Through this work, we will read about the background of the cause-and-effect story from Suke to Kasane and from Kasane to Kiku. We will also look at the biography of Yuten Shonin, who solved the Hanyu-mura possession case, and the relationship between Yuten Shonin and the Ooku region.

【『死霊解脱物語聞書』――憑依霊と除霊――】
日本三大怪談の一つ、「累（かさね）」について取り上げます。累・助の憑依と祐天上人の除霊を描いた『死霊解脱物語聞書』は、下総国羽生村で実際に起きた事件を記録した書といわれています。助から累へ、累から菊へと、めぐる因果物語の背景には何があったのか、作品を通して読み解きます。
また、羽生村憑依事件を解決した祐天上人の伝記、祐天上人と大奥との関係についても見てゆきます。
