Students are expected to acquire the various knowledge of culture of the Edo period necessary for reading the literature of this age.
Students will learn about the image of “Kigo”, the function of "Kireji," and the taste of phrases such as parody of classics, which are necessary for analyzing “Hokku(“Haiku” was called “Hokku” before Meiji period)” and acquire the ability to study and understand “Haikai”.
Through the image of "Kigo" expressed in “Hokku(Classical Haiku), we will consider how the people of the Edo period felt about the seasons . Since this course is held from April to July, we will read the Basho's “Hokku” of each seasons(from spring to summer) and episodes in Oku no hosomichi, and also sometimes “Waka” and “Renga”.
We would like to try to savor how each season has been cut out and recited in Classical Haiku, along with the actual change of seasons. In addition, it is planned to introduce “Renga”, “Renku" and “Maeku-zuke" (“Maeku- zuke" became popular among the common people during the Edo period).

春から夏へ、その季節に応じた季語を選んで発句を読んでゆくので、現代においても「季節感」を感じながら、江戸時代の俳諧の世界を味わってもらいたい。課題は締切厳守。毎回真剣に取り組むこと。
近世文学を読むうえで、必要な基礎知識および、近世文化についての専門的な知識を修得する。
短詩型文学である発句（俳句）を分析するのに必要な、季語のイメージや「切字」の機能、古典のパロディといった句の趣向について学び、俳諧（発句・連句）を読み解く力を身につける。

俳諧の発句（現代でいう俳句）に表現された「季語」のイメージを通して、江戸時代の人々は、どのように一年の季節を感じていたのかについて考えてゆく。本講座は４月から７月までなので、実際の春から夏までの季節の移り変わりとともに、その季節の芭蕉の発句や『奥の細道』のなかのエピソード、また、ときに中世和歌や連歌なども読んでゆくことにする。古典俳諧のなかでは、どのようなかたちでそれぞれの季節が切り取られ、句に詠まれてきたのかを、実際の季節の移り変わりとともに味わってみることにしたい。また、連歌や俳諧（連句）などの付合文芸や、江戸時代に庶民の間で大流行した前句付（まえくづけ）についても扱う予定である。
