【Course Objectives】

Through the study of Kagawa Kageki's poetry theory and the poems he composed in the early modern Edo period, we will understand the relationship between the state of early modern waka poetry, his academic practices, and his thought. Through appreciation of waka poems, students will also learn how to read waka poems themselves.

【Course Contents】

The study and thought of Kagawa Kageki, who established a school of waka poetry in the early modern Edo period, will be reviewed. Then, the overall picture of the history of early modern poetry will also be overviewed. After reviewing basic waka rhetorical techniques and grammatical matters of ancient Japanese literature, students will appreciate poems composed by Kagawa Kageki.
