By analyzing the waka poems composed by Motoori Norinaga, a Kokugaku scholar of the early modern Edo period, based on his research into ancient texts, we can understand the relationship between his theoretical scholarship and his practice.
Through appreciating waka, we learn how to read waka itself.
This lecture provides an overview of Motoori Norinaga's scholarship and thought during the early modern Edo period. It then examines his research on Japanese classical texts, particularly his studies of ancient texts.
We will explore the relationship between Norinaga's study of Japanese classical texts and his composition of waka poetry, examining the interplay between his theoretical stance and practical application.
