(1) Understand the relationship between Kokugaku and Kangaku.
(2) Systematically grasp the historical development of Kokugaku and Kangaku.
(3) Critically examine the formation of the concept of "Japan."
Understand how "Kokugaku" (National Learning), born in the Edo period, was established under the influence of "Kangaku" (Chinese Learning).
Specifically, grasp the historical transformations of "Kogigaku" by Ito Jinsai and Ito Togai, "Kobunjigaku" by Ogyu Sorai, and the "Kokugaku" of Kamo no Mabuchi and Motoori Norinaga.
Ultimately, grasp how the various phenomena we today conceptualize as "Japan" were established and created.

江戸時代に生み出された「国学」が、いかに「漢学」の影響のもとに成立したのかを理解する。
具体的には、伊藤仁斎・伊藤東涯らの「古義学」、荻生徂徠らの「古文辞学」、そして賀茂真淵・本居宣長の「国学」の歴史的変遷の様相を捉える。
ひいては今日の我々が「日本」として観念している諸事象が、いかに成立・創造されたのかを把握する。
