In this lecture course we will read foundation legends and didactic tales that relate to Japanese kami as well as to Buddhist deities and divinities. This will deepen students' understanding of premodern Japanese religious culture.
The History of Literature on kami and Buddhas
Japanese belief in kami developed in close relationship with Buddhism, and over time the idea of honji-suijaku was established, which maintained that the various kami were actually temporary forms taken by buddhas and bodhisattvas in order to save living beings. Against the background of this complicated relationship between kami and Buddhist entities, many miracle tales were written. In this lecture course, we will consider texts, materials, and paintings that relate to the main kami worshipped at such famous shrines as Kumano, Kasuga, and Hie. We will analyze the content of these works in order to interrogate premodern people's ideas about kami.

・単位を修得するには、次の3つの条件を満たす必要がある。①全14回中10回以上の出席、②授業後のリアクションペーパー（400字以上）の提出、③最終レポート（4000字以上）の提出。
・授業開始後に遅れて履修登録する場合でも、全14回中10回以上の出席という条件は同じ。未登録だからといって第一回の授業に出なければ、欠席扱いとなるので注意すること。
・出欠に関しては、教室に来て講義を受け、その後にリアクションペーパーを提出してはじめて出席したことになる。どちらか一方だけでは欠席扱いになるので注意すること。
・詳しい授業の進め方については、初回の授業時に説明する。

テーマ「神と仏の文学史」
日本の神祇信仰は、仏教と密接に関連しながら発展し、やがて、神々は仏・菩薩が衆生救済のために仮に姿を現した存在であるとする本地垂迹説が成立した。こうした複雑な神仏関係を背景に、多くの霊験譚・神異譚が作られたのである。本講義では、これらの中から熊野や春日、日吉といった著名な神社の祭神に関する文献や関連資料、絵画作品などを取り上げて、その内容を分析し、前近代の人々の神観念について考察する。
