Students will understand the historical flow of Heian period literature up to the creation of Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), the peak of narrative literature.
In the early Heian period, while Chinese literature was emphasized, Japanese culture gradually began to be recognized again, and coupled with the development of kana, waka poetry, which had been forgotten, was revived. This led to the creation of Japan's first imperially commissioned anthology of waka poetry, the Kokin Wakashu. This was followed by a series of works such as utamonogatari, which centered on the waka of real people such as Ariwara no Narihira, private collections of individual waka poems, creative fictional stories, diaries, and essays, before The Tale of Genji was completed in the mid-Heian period.
This article outlines the historical flow of Heian literature leading up to the creation of The Tale of Genji.

物語文学の最高峰『源氏物語』成立までの平安文学の歴史の流れを理解する。
Students will understand the historical flow of Heian period literature up to the creation of Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), the peak of narrative literature.
平安初期、漢文学が重視されているなか、次第に日本文化が再認識されるようになると、仮名の発達も相俟って、それまで埋もれていた和歌が復興する。日本で初めての勅撰和歌集『古今和歌集』の誕生である。その後、在原業平などの実在の人物の和歌を核とした歌物語や、個人の和歌を集めた私家集、創作的な作り物語、日記や随筆文学などを経て、平安中期に『源氏物語』が成立する。
『源氏物語』成立までの平安文学の歴史の流れを概説する。
