The course will investigate citations of prior literature in Genji Monogatari, to understand the tale’s presence within the flow of literary history.
The Tale of Genji is imbued with references to earlier literary works such as waka poetry, Chinese poetry, and stories. Guided by these quotations, readers will be able to overlay the world of earlier literary works behind The Tale of Genji, sense the similarities and differences between the two, and discern new meanings as they emerge, allowing them to appreciate the unique world of The Tale of Genji.
This lecture will shed light on the landscape of literary history that can be seen in retrospect from The Tale of Genji by exploring the way in which The Tale of Genji quotes from earlier literature.
Specific examples of earlier literature that will be looked at in this lecture include "Ge of Everlasting Regret," "Kokin Wakashu," "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," "The Tale of Ise," and "The Tale of Takamura."

『源氏物語』における先行文学の引用の有り様を探究し、文学史の流れの中に『源氏物語』があることを理解する。
The course will investigate citations of prior literature in Genji Monogatari, to understand the tale’s presence within the flow of literary history.
『源氏物語』は、和歌や漢詩や物語などの先行文学作品を引用しておのが血肉としている。引用表現に導かれた読者は、『源氏物語』の背後に先行文学作品の世界を重ね合わせ、両者の共通点と相違点を感じ取ったり、新しく生まれてくる意味を読み取ったりしながら、『源氏物語』独自の世界を鑑賞することとなる。
本講義では、『源氏物語』における先行文学の引用の有り様を探ることによって、『源氏物語』から振り返って見える文学史の風景を照らし出す。
本講義では、先行文学として、具体的には「長恨歌」『古今和歌集』『竹取物語』『伊勢物語』『篁物語』を取り上げる。
