By reading many of the tales recorded in the Gunki monagatari genre, the form of people in an age of continuing war and warfare as expressed in Middle Age literature will be taken as an aspect of the literature of that era, and a better understanding of literary history will be developed.
The Gunki monogatari genre was created on top of a literary and expressive history stretching back to antiquity, and after being created, has been re-creating in many guises, as well as providing the material for many of the literature works of subsequent generations. In this course, each class we will read a variety of folktales centered on a theme, and grasp the problems found therein. While doing so, we will pay close attention to the Gunki monogatari genre as a tale depicting war.

履修を機に，『平家物語』『保元物語』『平治物語』のいずれかを通読することをすすめる．

軍記物語にみえるさまざまな説話を読み解くことで，いくさ・戦争が続く時代とその渦中にあった人間の姿を表現する中世文学の様相を把握し，文学史への理解を深める．

軍記物語は古代以来の文学史・表現史を踏まえて生み出され，成立したのちにはさまざまに作りかえられ，後世の多くの文芸に素材を提供していった．この授業では，毎回テーマに即して物語に収められた説話を精読し，そこから問題点を把握していく．その際，軍記物語がいくさを扱う物語であることには注意を払う．
