Through a close reading of various waka-related tales, the students will gain an understanding of what waka poetry meant to the people of the time.
This section takes up a variety of thematic stories and explains their relationship to waka poetry, such as the Katoku Setsuwa, which describe how people are blessed or spared from difficulties because they compose good poems; folklore and legends written in waka poems; stories about poems composed by special beings such as the dead or gods and Buddha; and stories about people's obsession with composing good poems.

和歌にまつわる様々な説話を精読することを通して、当時の人々にとって和歌がいかなる存在であったかを理解する。

秀歌を詠むことで幸いを得たり難を免れたりする様を語る歌徳説話、和歌に詠まれた伝承・言い伝え、死者や神仏など特別な存在の詠んだ歌をめぐる説話、人々の勅撰集入集や秀歌詠出に対する執念に関する説話など、様々な主題の説話を取り上げ、和歌との関わりを解説していく。
