Saigyo was the most frequently selected poet in the Shinkokinshu and influenced Sogi and Matsuo Basho. This lesson will focus on Saigyo and deepen students' understanding of his waka poetry.
After an overview of Saigyo's life, his waka poems are read from various angles. The influence of Saigyo's waka poetry on later generations of poets and an anecdote about a silver-made cat given as a reward by Minamoto no Yoritomo, which Saigyo gave to a child playing outside the gate, will also be discussed.

『新古今集』入集数第一位で、宗祇や松尾芭蕉にも影響を与えた歌人である西行を取り上げ、その和歌について理解を深める。
Saigyo was the most frequently selected poet in the Shinkokinshu and influenced Sogi and Matsuo Basho. This lesson will focus on Saigyo and deepen students' understanding of his waka poetry.
西行の人生について概観した後に、その和歌を様々な角度から読み解いていく。また、西行の和歌が後代の歌人に与えた影響や、源頼朝からもらった銀作りの猫を門外で遊ぶ子どもに与えてしまった逸話など、西行にまつわる多様な伝承についても触れたい。
