Through close reading of the Hyakunin Isshu, the aim is to acquire a broad knowledge of classical waka poetry, including its distinctive characteristics, expressive techniques, the history of expression from the ancient to the medieval periods, the nature of the waka poet community, and methods for interpreting waka.
The Hyakunin Isshu is an anthology of selected waka poems composed by one hundred poets from Emperor Tenji to Juntoku-in, serving as a microcosm of waka poetry history from the ancient to the medieval periods. This lecture will meticulously examine the waka poems included in the Hyakunin Isshu, drawing upon both pre-Edo period commentaries and the latest scholarly theories.
The poems examined will be those by poets from the era of the Man'yōshū, Kokinshū, Gosenshū, and Shūishū, corresponding to the first half of the Hyakunin Isshu.
While we will generally proceed in numerical order, the sequence may occasionally be altered to allow for the examination of paired poems within a single session.

『百人一首』の精読を通して、古典和歌の特質、表現技法、上代から中世に至る表現史、歌人社会の在り方、和歌の読解方法など、和歌文学に関する幅広い知識を習得することを目標とする。

『百人一首』は、天智天皇から順徳院までの百人の歌人によって詠まれた和歌を集めた秀歌撰であり、上代から中世に至る和歌史の縮図ともいえる作品である。本講義では、『百人一首』に収められた和歌を、江戸時代以前の古注釈や最新の学説にも触れながら丹念に読み解く。取り上げる和歌は、『百人一首』の前半に相当する『万葉集』、『古今集』、『後撰集』、『拾遺集』時代の歌人による歌となる。原則として番号順に読んでいくが、一回の授業で対になる二首を扱うために順番が前後する場合がある。
