Learning about Edo culture supported by geisha, while wathcing the Movie "The Last Geisha Madame Minako" directed by Makoto Yasuhara
I believe that to truly understand Edo period culture, it is essential to have a proper understanding of Yoshiwara. However, Yoshiwara is a highly multifaceted space that creates a diverse array of impressions, varying greatly from person to person.The documentary film covered in this class is a work that I spent 10 years creating. It includes stories and performances directly shared by a geisha who lived in Yoshiwara for 80 years.Through my experiences and this film, You will be able to gain a clear and accurate understanding of what Yoshiwara was truly like, unclouded by indirect or vague impressions. This means that instead of relying on second-hand information or stereotypical portrayals, you will have the opportunity to see Yoshiwara for what it authentically represents—its historical, cultural, and social nuances. This clarity comes from engaging directly with detailed accounts, visual materials, and narratives that provide a vivid and multifaceted perspective on its reality. By approaching Yoshiwara with this level of insight, you can bypass surface-level generalizations and form a deeper, more meaningful connection to its historical essence.

吉原を江戸時代の文化を知るには吉原をきちんと理解する必要があると思います。しかしながら、「吉原」は実に多面的で十人十色のイメージを作り出してしまう空間でもあります。この授業で扱うドキュメンタリー映画は、私が10年がかりで制作したものです。ここには、吉原で80年生きてきた芸者さんから直接うかがった話や芸が収録されています。あなたがたは、私のこの経験と映画を通して、吉原とはどのようなところだったのかを、間接的であいまいなイメージを除いたかたちで、知ることができるでしょう。
