The goal is to develop the concepts and perspectives needed to understand the history of modern literature from the Meiji period onward from the standpoint of the media environment.
When discussing literary history, the focus is typically on the chronological evolution of specific literary works' content (themes) and form (expressive techniques). However, for literature to gain social standing as an artistic genre, it was essential for literary works to be produced as commodities, distributed through established channels to reach readers, and for a media environment enabling contact between readers and literary works to be established. This course focuses on the Meiji period, when modern literature emerged, examining the process by which modern literary works acquired commercial viability within journalism and secured their circulation within the media. It explores the relationship between the media environment and the content and form of literary works.

メディア環境の観点から明治期以降の近代文学の歴史をとらえる発想・視角を身につけることを目指す。
The goal is to develop the concepts and perspectives needed to understand the history of modern literature from the Meiji period onward from the standpoint of the media environment.
文学の歴史というと、具体的な文学作品の内容面（主題論）や形式面（表現技法）での時系列的な変化・変遷に注目されがちになるが、文学が芸術ジャンルの一つとして社会的ポジションを獲得するには、文学作品が商品として生産され、それが流通ルートにのって読者の手元に届く、読者と文学作品のコンタクトを安定的に可能にするメディア環境の成立が不可欠であった。この授業では、近代文学が成立した明治期に焦点を定め、近代文学作品が商業的ジャーナリズムにおける商品性を一定程度獲得し、メディアにおける流通性を確保する過程を説明し、メディア環境と文学作品の内容や形式との関連性について検討する。
