Students will explore the nature of "Uta-kotoba" in The Tale of Genji.
"Uta-kotoba" refers to waka-like language such as waka, quotations, and kago. The Tale of Genji is composed of scenes centered around waka poems composed by characters in the story, there are quotes from ancient poems in the prose, and kago is woven throughout. In this lecture, we will explore various aspects of The Tale of Genji, which expresses itself poetically by making extensive use of traditional waka language.
However, there are scenes in The Tale of Genji that are completely devoid of uta-kotoba expressions and are filled entirely with prose expressions. While exploring the meaning of uta-kotoba expressions, we will also consider why these expressions are absent from those scenes and what the difference is between uta-kotoba expressions and prose expressions.

『源氏物語』における「歌ことば」の有り様を探求する。
Students will explore the nature of "Uta-kotoba" in The Tale of Genji.
「歌ことば」とは、和歌、引歌、歌語などの和歌的な言語のことである。『源氏物語』は作中人物が詠んだ和歌を中心とした場面によって構成されたり、散文中に古歌の引用表現があったり、歌語が織り交ぜられたりしている。本講義では、伝統的な和歌の言葉をふんだんに取り入れて詩的な表現をなしている『源氏物語』の諸相を探求する。
一方、『源氏物語』には、「歌ことば」表現が一切なく、散文表現によってびっりしと埋め尽くされている場面がある。「歌ことば」表現の意味を探る一方で、なぜその場面には「歌ことば」表現がないのか、「歌ことば」表現と散文表現の違いとは何なのかを考えていきたい。
