【Course Objectives】

The purposes of this course are to: (1) read deeply, focusing on certain items, various folklore appearing in both the literary and performing arts of the Japanese Middle Ages; (2) multi-directionally unravel the symbolism embedded in each specific item, as well as the various truths and imagination that supports this; (3) by the former, comprehend the special characteristics of Middle Age literature; and (4) deepen comprehension by focusing on the bearers of each piece of folklore and by extracting common characteristics to illustrate the influence literature has on society.

【Course Contents】

While taking up the various folklore in both various collections of literature and peripheral materials created during the Middle Ages, careful reading with regard to various competing theories, among other concerns, addresses each folktale's structure and method of expression. Each meeting proceeds along a concrete theme of the course, and students submit a summary based upon that content.
