We imagine other worlds in our daily lives. Other worlds and other species exist all around us.
How have the Japanese understood other species and other worlds to exist?
Let's analyze stories and paintings and think about Japanese stories in which other worlds and other species appear.
We will mainly look at the fairy tales "Yabye Nezumi," "Kifune no Honchi," and "Tawara Tōta Monogatari."

日本の古典には、様々な異類や異界が登場します。私たちの日常の隙間に異界はイメージされ、そこから異類なる者たちが顔を覗かせています。非常に身近な場所に異界や異類は潜んでいるのです。日本人は、異類や異界をどのような存在と理解し、語ってきたのでしょうか。説話やお伽草子、時には参詣曼荼羅などの絵画史料をも取り入れ、様々な異類や異界にふれる説話や物語を読みながら、身近に異類や異界が潜む日本のものがたりについて考えてみましょう。本講義では、説話や物語を通して異類や異界のイメージについて理解を深めます。主として取り上げるのは、お伽草子『弥兵衛鼠』『貴船の本地』『俵藤太物語』ですが、これらの作品の単なる読解ではなく、関連する事柄から派生して、様々なモノや作品を取りあげ、異界と異類への理解を深めていきます。
