This lecture will analyze how “The Tale of Genji” plays a role in the waka poems composed by Motoori Norinaga in the early modern Edo period. After reviewing the scholarship and thought of Motoori Norinaga, we will review the study of The Tale of Genji up to the early modern period.
The “mono no aware”, which can be said to be a byword for Motoori Norinaga, was born out of his reading of the Tale of Genji. The relationship between “The Tale of Genji,” Norinaga's waka poems, and his core idea of “mono no aware” will be analyzed.
