Students will acquire fundamental techniques for interpreting early modern Japanese literature. Furthermore, they will develop applied skills to accurately assess the achievements and limitations of existing research and attempt diverse interpretations. While studying the social systems and customs of the period, they will deepen their understanding of various literary genres and cultivate the ability to freely interpret the diverse works of the early modern era.
We will select representative works from the ukiyo-zōshi (pictorial novels) by Saikaku and subsequent authors for close reading. By appreciating the appeal of ukiyo-zōshi—which depicted the customs and human emotions of the time through various methods—and interpreting each work from multiple perspectives, we will deepen our understanding of Edo period culture.

近世文学を読み解くための基礎的な技法を身につけるとともに、先行研究の成果と問題点を正確に判断し多様な読解を試みることのできる応用的能力を養う。また、当時の社会制度や風俗等の知識・教養の獲得にくわえ、さまざまな文学ジャンルに対する理解を深め、近世の多様な作品を自在に読みこなせる能力を養成する。

西鶴およびそれ以後の浮世草子のうち代表的な作品を選び、その問題点について検討しつつ精読する。娯楽性を追究し、当時の風俗・人情の諸相を多様な方法によって描きあげた浮世草子の面白さを味わいながら、各作品をさまざまな視点から読み解くことによって、江戸時代の文化に対する理解を深める。
