The objective of this course is to examine how novelists depicted the turbulent society of the late Edo period and the early Meiji period. Students will also acquire foundational knowledge of this historical era, including its book culture and systems of written expression.
During the transitional period from the late Edo era to the early Meiji era, elements of both traditional and emerging cultures coexisted and interacted within Japanese society, a dynamic that was also reflected in its literature. This course examines literary developments of the period in relation to contemporary social conditions, media environments, and the novelists who shaped them.

幕末から明治初期～20年頃の文学について詳しく講義するので、大きな流れを知っていることが好ましい。
授業形態：PowerPointを中心にした講義形式で、黒板も必要に応じて使用する。理解を深めるために映像資料や現物資料なども適宜活用する。受講者の人数にもよるが、当時の文字や書き込み、旧蔵者が分かる蔵書印などの判読方法についても折を見て取り上げる。
幕末・維新から明治20年代初頭の文学状況について理解を深め、価値が大きくゆらぐ時代に文学者がどのように社会を描いたのか、その実態を知ることを目標とする。また、現代とは異なる本の装丁や文字表記などに関する基礎的な知識も身につける。

この講義があつかう幕末・維新から明治20年代初頭は、江戸時代と明治時代の文学が混淆し、近代の文学が少しずつ形づくられていく過渡期である。その中で「文学」のありかたは時代状況に合わせてどのように変化したのか。社会状況や出版メディア、虚実の問題や文学者たちの位置づけと関わらせながら、激動の時代に文学に携わった様々な文学者たちの姿勢や情熱、その作品について考察する。（なお本授業のテーマ欄には「近現代日本文学」と表記されていますが、「現代」は扱いませんので注意してください。）
