Through analysis of literary texts and visual expressions, we will train students' ability to consider the people and various aspects of society, customs and culture that are depicted. We will interpret literary texts and train students' ability to restructure the problems that the texts raise in their own words.
Yasunari Kawabata was active from the 1920s to the early 1970s and was the first Japanese author to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. In this course, we will trace Kawabata’s life while conducting close readings of his major works to illuminate the distinct characteristics of his literary expression. Furthermore, we will explore why his literature garnered such international acclaim and examine how that recognition transformed the Japanese literary landscape.

授業で扱う小説については、毎回、授業時間外での精読を指示し、各自の〈読み〉をリアクション・ペーパーにまとめてもらう。また、リアクション・ペーパーのなかで特に優れた内容のものを翌週の授業冒頭で紹介し、複数の〈読み〉を共有する。授業で扱うテキストはPDF化してCanvas LMSに掲載する。

文学テキストや映像表現の分析を通して、そこに描かれる人間、および、社会・風俗・文化の諸相を考察する能力を鍛える。文学テキストを解釈し、そのテキストが投げかけている問題を自らの言葉で編成し直す能力を鍛える。

川端康成は1920年代から1970年代前半まで活躍し、日本人として初めてのノーベル文学賞を受賞しました。この授業では、川端康成の生涯をたどりつつ、代表作を精読し表現の特徴を明らかにします。また、彼の文学がなぜ国際的な評価を得るようになったのか、そのことによって日本の文学状況にどのような変化がもたらされたのかを考えます。
