・Primarily focusing on girls' novels, students will learn methods for interpreting literary works (story, characters, narrative, etc.).
・Alongside interpreting literary works, students will learn methods for analyzing visual representations such as illustrations and manga.
・Alongside interpreting literary works, students will deepen their understanding of the historical context surrounding them.
・Alongside interpreting literary works, students will deepen their understanding of the underlying social and gender issues within them.
This course examines girls' novels and girls' culture from the Meiji period through the postwar era. Girls' novels emerged in the late Meiji period against the backdrop of expanding girls' education and the development of magazine media. Combining educational elements with entertainment, this genre developed significant support as a distinct cultural form with its own aspirations and styles, while simultaneously teaching girls various norms appropriate to each era. This course aims to historically unravel girls' novels and girls' culture, which continue to profoundly influence contemporary pop culture. It seeks to deepen understanding through the analysis of novels, illustrations, manga, and other materials, while also exploring the relationship between culture and society, and issues of gender.

明治期から戦後にかけての少女小説・少女文化について考察する。少女小説は、女子教育の拡充と雑誌メディアの発展を背景に、明治後期に誕生した。教育的要素と娯楽性を合わせもつこのジャンルは、それぞれの時代において、少女たちにさまざまな規範を教え諭すものでありつつ、独自の志向・様式を持つ文化として大きな支持を得ながら発展してきた。現代のポップ・カルチャーにも大きな影響をもつ少女小説・少女文化を歴史的に紐解きながら、小説や挿絵、漫画などの読解、文化と社会の関係、ジェンダーの問題などについても理解を深めることを目指す。
