The purpose of this course is to understand the historical development of kana, including man'yogana, katakana, and hiragana. Through the history of Japanese writing systems, this course will examine how kana was created and used in ancient and medieval Japan. This course aims to deepen students' understanding of the development of kana in the course of history, and to cultivate their ability to read and understand historical materials written in kana.
This course provides an overview of the history of kana among the writing systems of the Japanese language. We will understand the development and usage of man'yogana, which was used in ancient Japan before the birth of katakana and hiragana, through materials such as epigraph and mokkan (wooden tablet). We will look into kunten (guiding marks for reading Classical Chinese) materials to confirm the various stages of katakana, which originated from kunten used to read Classical Chinese texts, and trace their historical change. As for hiragana, we will learn about its origin as well as development from materials that are written and excavated, and touch upon its uses including literacy education. Students will be asked to practice reading the materials introduced in class.

本講義は、日本語における仮名（万葉仮名・片仮名・平仮名）の歴史的発達について理解することを目的とする。日本語表記体の歴史を通じて、古代・中世の日本において仮名がどのように作られて用いられていたのかについて考察する。仮名の歴史的変遷に対する理解を深めることと、仮名で書かれた文字資料の読解力を培うことを本講義の目標とする。

本講義では、日本語の表記体のうち、仮名を使用したものの歴史を概観する。片仮名や平仮名が誕生する以前に古代日本で用いられた万葉仮名の発達と用途について金石文や木簡などの資料を通して理解する。漢文の訓読に使う訓点から生まれた片仮名の各段階の姿を訓点資料で確認し、その変遷を追う。平仮名に関しては、伝世資料や出土資料からその発生と展開を学び、文字教育などの用途にも触れる。また、授業で紹介された資料の読解練習をしてもらうことも予定している。
