【Course Objectives】

This course aims for students to encounter actual traditional Japanese books and to learn the basics of bibliographical research.

【Course Contents】

After the instructor explains characteristics of traditional Japanese books and an overview of early modern printing media, students practice deciphering writing in running form characters and repeat bibliographical exercises using traditional Japanese books, especially actual woodblock-printed versions. In addition to studying the basics of bibliography, students learn about genre-specific characteristics and differences in bookbinding formats through reprinting and researching literary works from various early modern genres.
