To understand the development of classical studies in early modern Japan and be able to describe basic matters based on appropriate materials.
To be able to discuss the relationship between literature of the early modern period and the trends of the time, based on one’s own awareness of the issues.
In early modern Japan, the flourishing publishing culture led to a dramatic increase in the number of people who not only read classics but actively studied and applied them, far exceeding the medieval period. Today, their activities are seen as pioneering modern humanities fields like literature, history, and philosophy. However, unlike today's specialized academic systems, this early modern intellectual activity was diverse and multifaceted.
Intellectuals of this period collected books on ancient Japan to study and use for practical purposes. They built connections with others sharing similar interests, and some aimed to raise their social status through their knowledge.
We will tentatively call this activity, which influenced various aspects of society, "Wagaku." This course will explore the figures who led these activities, the background thoughts that supported them, and the extent of their spread.
Important Note on Assignments: In addition to the final report, students will be assigned several short tasks throughout the course. Please be aware that these tasks may require you to search for materials in the library or visit exhibitions at off-campus institutions.

江戸時代の日本では、出版文化の隆盛により、たんに古典を読むことに飽きたらず、それを本格的に研究し、またさまざまな実践に活かそうとするひとびとの層が、前代と比べて飛躍的に拡大しました。かれらの営みはこんにちでは国学、和学、古学などさまざまに呼ばれ、文学・歴史・思想・宗教・美術といった領域の近代的な研究の先駆として位置づけられていますが、現代のような専門分化した学問大系とは異なる、よくもわるくも多様かつ雑多な知的営為でした。
彼らはいにしえの日本に関わる書物や資料を集め、それらを読み解くばかりでなく、その知識を活かして創作などの実践を行い、また志向を同じくする同士のあいだでさまざまなコネクションを構築し、また場合によっては知的野心を抱いて当時の社会におけるプレゼンスを向上させようとするなど、じつに多様な活動を行っていました。
近世期の朝廷社会や武家社会にも様々な余波をもたらしたその知的いとなみを、一応ここでは「和学」と呼ぶことにしますが、本授業ではそうした近世和学の営みが、どのような人物によって担われていたか、その背景にはどのような思潮があったか、またそれはどのような拡がりをもって展開したか、といった視点から教授してゆきます。
