・This class will deepen your understanding of the culture and history of Japanese books.
・The purpose of this class is to understand the basic methodology of bibliography necessary for conducting research on Japanese classical books.
Bibliography is an academic field that encompasses the entirety of books. Many intellectual activities of human beings have been passed down to the present age in the form of books. Books are not only about content, but also physical entities. In other words, a book should be considered a collection of physical elements such as paper, text, images, ink, covers, threads, glue, and so on. Furthermore, books are not always transmitted in the original form as written by the author. Various changes can occur in the text due to factors such as writing and publishing. Deepening our knowledge about the diversity, functions, and historical development of books should lead to a better understanding of their contents. In this course, we will focus on the theory, method, and practice of bibliography, primarily for pre-modern Japanese books.

書誌学とは書物の万般にわたる学問を指す言葉です。過去の人間の知的な営みはおおくの場合、書物の形で今日に伝わっていますが、書物はそこに書かれた内容だけで成り立っているわけではありません。印刷ないし筆によって文字や絵などを定着させたいくつもの紙の束を、ひとつに綴じ合わせ、その外側に表紙をまとわせた書物は、書かれている内容以前にひとつの物質でもあります。また、書物は必ずしも作者が書いた原型のままに伝存するとはかぎりません。筆写や出版などの契機によって、テキストにさまざまな変動が生じるのが常です。書物という物理的条件のもとに、今日のわれわれは過去の人間の知的営みを覗き見ることが可能なのです。ならば書物という資料形態が持っている多様性や機能、またその歴史的展開や流通の実態などに関する知識を深めることは、そこに書かれた内容の理解にも確実に繋がってゆくはずです。この授業では近世日本の書物を主たる対象として、書誌学的な研究アプローチの方法と実践について主に講義形式で教授してゆきます。
