【Course Objectives】

We will conduct a close reading of Jiu Yuexi's "Better Days(You, the Youth) "and Lin Yihan's " Fang SiQi's First Love Paradise(Fang Si-Chi's First Love Paradise/ English Edition). Through this, we will explore social issues such as bullying, poverty problem, economic disparity, academic meritocracy, sexual violence, grooming, and the #MeToo movement, while deepening our understanding of literature from the Chinese-speaking world.

【Course Contents】

We will read "Fang Siqi's First Love Paradise" (original: 2017 / Japanese: 2019) by Taiwanese writer Lin Yihan (1991-2017) and consider this work and the context in which it was created. We will also read one of the short or second volume works by Zhang Ailing (1920-95), a writer who has had a great influence in the Greater China region for a long time, and ask the participants to present their thoughts on the work and its influence on "Fang Siqi's First Love Paradise" in turn, followed by a discussion among all participants.
In this exercise, we will read “Better Days” by Chinese author Jiu Yuexi (originally published in 2016, Japanese translation: 2024) and “Fang Siqi's First Love Paradise” by Taiwanese author Lin Yi-han (1991–2017; originally published in 2017, Japanese translations: 2019 and 2024).
We will reflect on the works, as well as the contexts in which they were created and the social issues they address. Additionally, we will examine the influence of global literary works and Japanese culture referenced in the texts and explore their meanings.
With various perspectives in mind, participants will read the works, present their analyses in turn, and engage in group discussions based on these presentations to deepen understanding.
We will also reflect on the societal issues in both China and Japan that give rise to the severe bullying and sexual violence depicted in the works.
Through discussions, we aim to grasp the authors' intentions behind these creations and the significance of their writing. By engaging with these themes, let this be an opportunity for everyone to cultivate richer imagination and resilience, enhancing your lives moving forward.
"Better Days is a pure love story that portrays young people quietly supporting each other while navigating the harsh realities of severe bullying, the pressures of an academic society, fierce competition in exams, poverty, and economic disparity.
The novel was adapted into a film by Hong Kong director Derek Tsang (Derek Kwok-cheung Tsang), which went on to win numerous awards at Hong Kong film festivals and was even nominated for an Academy Award in the United States. In Japan, the film has been repeatedly screened and appreciated by audiences."
In recent years, sexual assaults against minors, which have not been so much exposed in the past, have been increasingly reported in Japan, along with the terms "mind control" and "grooming," such as power-based sexual assaults in the entertainment industry and sexual assaults and sexual abuse against children and students by teachers at schools and cram schools.
The book is not only an outstanding work of literature, but also a worth reading text that considers the serious problem of sexual assault of minors in modern society from the perspectives of the victim, the perpetrator, and a third party. Soon after its release, it became a bestseller in Taiwan with 260,000 copies (as of 2019) and 1 million copies (as of 2020) in mainland China. It has been translated in Japan, the United States, South Korea, Thailand, Poland, Russia, and other countries.
The Japanese edition of the book was temporarily out of print, but was reprinted in February 2024 by Hakusuisha U Books due to the strong demand from various quarters as a work that should be read in Japan today. We also consider the significance of this work, which should be read now, even though it has been almost seven years since the original publication.
