"Utopia” has long been a source of unabated imagery in literary and visual works. In this seminar, after a close reading of “Utopian Illusions” (Kawabata Kaori), we will read and examine a variety of works.
The Greek word “utopia” (coined by Thomas More), meaning “an Elysium that does not exist anywhere," has been a source of unabated imagery in literary and visual works, from Plato's "The State" through the socialist utopias of the 19th century to the science fiction futuristic images of the present days. In this seminar, after a close reading of the classic “Utopian Illusion” (Kawabata Kaori), which traces the genealogy of the image of utopia from multiple angles, we will read and examine different kinds of works.

「ユートピア」は、長きにわたって文学・映像作品の汲みせぬイマージュの源泉であり続けてきた。本演習では、『ユートピアの幻想』（川端香男里）を精読した後、様々な作品の読解・検討を行う。

ギリシア語で「どこにもない理想郷」を意味する「ユートピア」（トマス・モアの造語）は、プラトンの『国家』を源に、19世紀の社会主義的ユートピアを経て、現代のSF的未来像に至るまで、文学・映像作品の汲みせぬイマージュの源泉であり続けてきた。本演習では、ユートピア像の系譜を多角的に辿った古典『ユートピアの幻想』（川端香男里）を精読した後、諸作品の読解・検討を行う。
