Crossroads, twilight hours, Setsubun, bridges, rivers, mountain passes—since ancient times, “boundaries” have been perceived as places deviating from the central order sustaining daily life. The affinity between boundaries and the uncanny likely arises from this consideration. What exactly is a “boundary”? In this seminar, we will reexamine “boundaries” not only from a folkloristic perspective but also from philosophical viewpoints, contemplating how they have functioned as a source of cultural imaginations.
Since Kunio Yanagita discussed the deities of boundaries in his work ”Ishi-gami Mondo" (1910), “boundaries” have long remained one of a major topics in Japanese folklore studies. At the same time, the concept of “boundaries” as framed within folklore studies has faced various critiques. This seminar will broadly revisit debates surrounding “boundaries,” including the phenomenological question of what “boundaries” fundamentally mean to us, and consider how they have functioned as a form of cultural imaginations.

四つ辻、逢魔が時、節分、橋、川、峠など、古くから「境界」は日常生活を支える中心的秩序から逸脱した場と捉えられてきた。おそらく怪異や異世界的転生と境界の親和性はそこに生じる。「境界」とはそもそも何なのか。演習では民俗学だけでなく思想的観点から「境界」を再考し、文化的想像力の源泉としてどのように機能してきたかを考える。

柳田國男が『石神問答』（1910年）で境の神を論じて以来、「境界」は長いあいだ日本民俗学の主要なトピックでありつづけてきた。その一方で、民俗学的な枠組みで語られる「境界」概念に対しては様々な批判も行われてきた。本演習では、そもそも「境界」とは私（たち）にとって何なのかという現象学な問いを含めて、広く「境界」をめぐる議論を振り返ったうえで、どのような文化的想像力として機能してきたかを考える。
