In recent years, there has been a marked tendency to approach subjects like “yōkai” and “kaii”—traditionally considered the exclusive domain of ethnological research—from the perspectives of intellectual history and cultural theory. Through reading such new “yōkai studies” research in this seminar, we will gain academic insights into representations surrounding ‘yōkai’ and “kaii."
The long-established domain of folklore studies, “yōkai” and “kaii,” has in recent years been discussed from diverse angles across various fields. Attempts to interpret yōkai studies from an intellectual history perspective, media studies analyzing the circulation and social impact of yōkai representations, gender-based research, and global comparative studies of yōkai—these efforts at renewal extend across diverse disciplines. This seminar will provide participants with the tools to academically engage with yokai and supernatural phenomena through close reading of seminal works that engage with these new trends in yokai studies and supernatural studies.

近年では、伝統的に民族学研究の独壇場とされてきた「妖怪」や「怪異」といった主題を、思想史的・文化論的に論じる傾向が顕著である。この演習では、そうした新たな「妖怪学」研究を読むことを通じて、「妖怪」や「怪異」をめぐる表象をアカデミックに考える手がかりを得る。

長く民俗学の独壇場とされてきた「妖怪」や「怪異」は、近年では様々な分野で多様な角度から論じられている。妖怪学を思想史的な角度から読み解こうとする試みや、妖怪表象の流通と社会的インパクトを分析するメディア研究、ジェンダーの視点に基づく研究、グローバルな妖怪比較研究など、刷新の試みは多様な分野に広がる。本演習では、こうした新たな妖怪学や怪異学の潮流に棹さす論考の精読を通じて、妖怪や怪異をアカデミックに考える手がかりを得る。
