The course has three main objectives: 1) to read through a long novel (which is by no means a self-evident); 2) to pay clse attention to the narrative flow and the stylistic nuances; 3) and thereby to remove any hesitation toward an analytical — or even « critical » — reading.
While reading Yu Nagashima’s "Next to Room No. 3 is No. 5" ("3 no Tonari wa 5 go-shitsu" (20116)— novel which tells the stories of several persons bound together by the only fact that they each lived in the same apartment unit at different times), we will pay close attention to the details of expression and delve into the interconnections among thematic constellations deemed significant (which do not necessarily appear in explicit form). When necessary, reference will be made to other works (including the author's own, and not limited to the literary field).

テキストの講読、持参は必須（授業2回目に確認をおこなう）。
1）日本語の長編小説一篇を最後まで読み通すこと（それ自体が決して自明のことではない）、2）同時にナラティヴ（語り）の流れや文体上のニュアンスに持続的に注意を向けること、3）そのようにして、分析的——さらにいえば「批評的」な——読みへの気後れを取り払うこと、以上の3点を目標とする。

別々の時期に同じアパートの一室に暮らした経験を有するという事実のみによって結ばれる複数の人物の物語を語った長島有の長篇小説『三の隣は五号室』（2016年）を読みながら、表現の細部に注意を払いつつ、重要と思われる（必ずしも明示的に現れるとはかぎらない）テーマ系の連関を掘り下げる。必要に応じ、（作家自身のそれを含め、しかし文学に限定されない）他の諸作品を参照する。
