The theme of this course is "catastrophe." We aim to 1) learn how Western philosophy has thought about it, and 2) understand how we can approach this topic in a philosophical manner?
To a greater or lesser degree, we all experience various kinds of "catastrophe." It can be a personal event (such as the death of a loved one), or it can be a major disaster that affects society as a whole, such as a natural disaster, epidemic, or war. In this course, we will first examine how what is called "catastrophe" are discussed in the history of philosophy (particularly Western philosophy). At the same time, we aim to not only "introduce" some "philosophical ideas" about it, but also "think philosophically" about what is called a "catastrophe".

テーマに関心があれば、哲学について詳しい知識をもっていなくても構いません。ただ、ある程度は哲学の基礎的な知識を有しているほうが理解は捗りますので、哲学概論1、哲学への扉、哲学対話 in Rikkyoなどをすでに履修しているか、あるいは並行して履修することが望ましいです（必須ではありません）。
この授業は、「災害／災厄（カタストロフィ）」を主題とし、1）西洋哲学がそれについてどのように考えてきたのかを知り、2）この主題について哲学的にアプローチするにはどのようにすべきかを理解することを目指します。

多かれ少なかれ、私たちはさまざまな「災害／災厄」を経験しています。それは、個人的な出来事であることもあれば（親しい人との死別など）、自然災害や疫病、戦争など、社会全体に影響を及ぼす大災害であることもあります。この授業では、第一に、「災害／災厄」と呼ばれているものについて（ひとまずは定義づけはせずに）、それに関連するさまざまなテーマについてこれまでの哲学（特に西洋哲学）の歴史のなかで出てきた多様な考え方を適宜参照していきます（そうすると実際には近代哲学の基本的な流れの大まかなスケッチすることになりますので、随時解説を盛り込みます）。と同時に、そうした「哲学的な考え」の「紹介」にとどまらず、「災害／災厄」と呼ばれているものとはそもそも何なのかを「哲学的に考える」ことを目指します。
