To develop an understanding of who or what is (considered as) the “Other”.
To develop an understanding of what “coexistence” entails and how it can be practiced.
To cultivate philosophical way of thinking
In recent years, terms such as “coexistence with others” and “diversity” have become increasingly common in public discourse. While these ideas are often presented as ideals to be pursued, they have also given rise to practical difficulties and challenges, prompting expressions such as “consideration fatigue” or “diversity fatigue.”
Questions surrounding the acceptance or exclusion of migrants and refugees, how we should relate to wild animals, and how we ought to treat the natural environment etc are all relevant here. Even those closest to us—our own family members—may be considered “others.” Moreover, how should we engage with AI and robots?
This course, titled Philosophical Inquiry, addresses these issues by exploring several topics and aims to examine who or what is meant by the “Other,” and what “coexistence” entails and how it might be realized. However, the purpose of the course is not to simply advocate the importance of coexistence with others or to promote diversity as an unquestioned good.
Although each of these themes can be approached through the methodologies of various academic disciplines, this course focuses on developing a philosophical approach to these questions. By engaging with several topics and grounding discussion in fundamental concepts, students will aim to acquire the ability to think philosophically about issues concerning others and coexistence.
The course will proceed broadly in accordance with the following themes, although the content may be revised or adjusted in response to students’ interests and feedback.
1) Migration and Refugees
2) Family and Care
3) Gender and Minorities
4) Robots and Artificial Intelligence
5) Animals
6) Nature
The course is constructed as follows.
Each theme will be covered over a two-week period and will consist of:
(1) a session of philosophical dialogue;
(2) a session in which the instructor provides an overview of key concepts and fundamental issues;
(3) a lecture by a guest speaker, followed by a question-and-answer session.

「哲学概論1」、「哲学への扉」、「哲学対話 in Rikkyo」、「倫理思想」等の哲学の入門的な授業を履修していることが望ましいです。
また、そのほかの「哲学講義」、「現代倫理」の授業を並行して履修することをお勧めします。

近年、さまざまなところで「他者との共生」や「多様性」という言葉をよく耳にします。それは、目指すべき理想として語られることもあれば、現実的な困難や課題も生じてきているようで、「配慮疲れ」「多様性疲れ」のような声も聞こえてきます。
「移民・難民」の受け入れ・排斥、野生動物をどうするのか、自然環境をどうするのか。いや、身近にいる家族も「他者」かもしれません。AIやロボットとはどう付き合って行けば良いのでしょう。
「哲学講義」を銘打つこの授業では、この問題について、いくつかのトピックをめぐって、そもそもそこで言われる「他者」とは誰か／何か、「共生」とは何をどうすることなのかを考えることを目指します。ただし、「他者との共生」が重要だとか「多様性」が大事だと説くことを目的としているわけではありません。各々の主題については、さまざまな学問分野の方法論に基づいてアプローチする仕方がさまざまあると思いますが、この授業ではいくつかのトピックについて基本的な事項を踏まえつつ、「哲学的に考える」アプローチの習得を目指しています。
