This course aims to deepen students' understanding of the culture of Central Europe, through the appreciation of works in different genres, such as plays, novels, essays, and films. At the same time, students will learn how to read and critique texts, with the aim of acquiring skills that can be applied to other areas of study.
This class will begin with an overview of the basic notions of Central European culture with reference to Milan Kundera's essay on Central Europe. Next, specific authors and works will be discussed. The class will be conducted based on a sequence of “lecture,” “reading and discussion,” and “feedback -lecture,” and will be interactive, reflecting the opinions of the students as needed. In reading works, we will examine also rhetorical concepts such as metaphor, metonymy, and irony.

中欧の文化について、戯曲、小説、評論、映画など異なるジャンルの作品鑑賞を通して理解を深める目的とする。並行して、テクストの読み方、批評の方法も学び、他の領域への応用可能性も身につけることを目的とする。
This course aims to deepen students' understanding of the culture of Central Europe, through the appreciation of works in different genres, such as plays, novels, essays, and films. まず、チェコやポーランドを中心とする中欧の文化について、ミラン・クンデラによる「中欧論」の議論を参照しつつ、基本的な流れを概観する。次いで、特定の作家・作品を取り上げ、歴史的、文学的な文脈や特徴を解説し、理解を深める。「解説（講義）」→「作品鑑賞（読解・ディスカッション）」→「フィードバック（講義）」という構成を軸として授業を進め、履修者の意見などを随時反映させながら、双方向的な授業を進めていく予定。作品読解にあたっては、メタファー、メトニミー、アイロニーといった修辞上の基本概念を確認しつつ、それぞれの歴史的文脈も考慮する点を意識づける。
