Human Resource Management (HRM) should not be viewed only from a domestic perspective. A much more dynamic and international approach is required than one domestic human resource management. International Human Resource Management (IHRM) is becoming increasingly important to competitiveness and strategy in global business. It is very complex and difficult for IHRM to reach the optimal solution. The goal of this course is to provide students with the basic knowledge to lead to excellent solutions in IHRM.
Class content
This course covers most of the important topics of IHRM. You will learn both IHRM theory and practical cases. You will also learn some about HRM in Japan in international business.
Teaching Methods
Classes are conducted by lectures, student-instructor interaction, class discussions, individual homework and group exercises in small reports. We may also invite guest speakers with valuable experience and knowledge of IHRM.
Leveraging AI
Utilize some AI for individual reports, group work, and final reports on short case study issues from text and other topics. Through the exercises, you will become proficient in how to use AI productively, which is essential as a skill in the future.
Class Structure
Typically, half of the students in this course are international students. To make this course more valuable, the active participation of students from different backgrounds is very important.

The course students should read the handouts and short case studies assigned from the textbook before class. The short case studies form a key part of this course as well as lecture. In addition, the course students are required to prepare for class discussion and group presentations based on the case analysis above including AI use.
At Rikkyo university, one credit is defined as 45 hours of study (including class time). Based on this, students are expected to engage in both pre-class preparation and post-class review.

However, the instructor will provide the handouts with all necessary information for it from the textbook . Therefore, the course students do not necessarily purchase the book by themselves. No knowledge of IHRM nor HRM are required in principle though if a student has any areas of knowledge about strategy, marketing, HRM, organizational behaviors and cross-cultural communication, it will be helpful to understand the learning points in this course. Students are required rational thinking ability beyond stereotype, common sense, and cultural bias.
