This course is an introduction to financial management for companies which operate globally. The course covers the basic principles of financial management and applies them to the decisions faced by financial managers. The objective is to familiarize the student with financial concepts and tools used in business. Topics include an introduction to standard financial decision-making tools, the role of stock and bond markets, the risk & return tradeoff, equity restructuring, and foreign exchange risk. The course will not cover financial valuation of the firm.
Finance is not limited to banking and securities firms. Planning sections in manufacturing/service firms rely on financial concepts. And in marketing, for example, advertising spending/expenditure is often assessed using financial tools. Other examples of financial applications include incentive schemes for executives and managers (human resources) such as stock options. In short, students concentrating in marketing, communication, or management should find the financial tools covered in this course of use in the business world.
It is assumed you have enrolled in an introductory finance course prior to taking this course.
Students must earn a passing grade on the Final Test in order to pass this course.
For special online zoom sessions, students should be prepared to connect online zoom with an appropriate device with a stable internet connection.
