After taking this course, students should:
1) be able to understand the modern corporate finance theory and estimate the cost of capital of the firm based on the theory.
2) be able to evaulate the value of the firm to make analysis when making financial decision in the practical world.
3) acquire the analytical foundation necessary to understand advanced topics in corporate finance.
4) be able to create spreadsheets and solve practical finance issues using Excel.
The course focuses on one of the core topics in finance: corporate finance and valuation. Its objective is to familiarize students with both the theoretical background and practical implementation of corporate finance as used in industry. The course covers corporate finance theory related to the evaluation of the cost of capital, examines firm valuation based on financial statement analysis and free cash flow methods, and then proceeds to advanced topics such as mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, innovation, and payout policy.
The intermediate-level topics and skills covered in this course should be useful for students who wish to work as financial analysts or business plan consultants in industry. In addition, for those who plan to pursue advanced degrees in finance (Master’s or Ph.D.), this course can be regarded as an introduction to graduate-level finance courses.
This course is designed as a continuation of the BT183 "Finance" course. Students are expected to be familiar with the skills and knowledge taught in BT183; therefore, it is recommended that students take BT183 before enrolling in this course. The course is taught in English, and the course content is highly Excel-oriented. Bringing a personal laptop to class is strongly recommended. In addition, students must attend the final examination in order to pass the course.
