【Course Objectives】

Upon completion of this course, students will
1. have gained a basic understanding of similarities and differences between family-owned business and non-family-
owned companies regarding characteristics, challenges, and opportunities.
2. be acquainted with core elements from the Theory of Family Business Management.
3. be able to use basic conceptual and analytical tools for the understanding of Family-owned Businesses.

【Course Contents】

This course examines the characteristics, strategic goals, and governance mechanisms of family-owned businesses operating in complex business environments. It explores the unique challenges and opportunities these companies face, covering businesses from small family enterprises to large family firms. The course analyzes the key drivers of family business longevity during internationalization and evaluates the strategic and managerial implications involved. The practical and cultural background will be one typical of Germany and Northern Europe.

Students are expected to read required readings that include chapters, cases and journal articles. Students are also expected to prepare well for in-class discussions and (group) presentations.
At Rikkyo university, one credit is defined as 45 hours of study (including class time). Based on this, students are expected to engage in both pre-class preparation and post-class review.
