After taking this course students should:
1) develop a solid understanding of core economic concepts.
2) be able to apply economic thinking in a business or sports industry context.
3) acquire working knowledge (familiarity with) of EXCEL for statistical analysis.
4) acquire the basic skills and knowledge to read empirical academic papers in sports economics and undertake more advanced course work in the area of applied economics.
This course is an introduction to intermediate microeconomics with applications specific to the sports industry. We will cover a wide range of topics including demand (and supply) in sport, discriminatory pricing, implications of profit maximization, utility maximization as well as topics unique to the sports industry such as competitive balance and athlete valuation. An important objective of the seminar is to read and understand academic empirical research papers. Thus, background in introductory economics and quantitative methods is required.
This course is held in English. Permission of the instructor is required.
Prerequisites: 1) introductory (principles) economics, 2) an introductory course in statistics which covers regressions, and 3) an introductory calculus course (college or high school).

Students should have a PC notebook and/or pad with EXCEL and a stable access to the internet (from home).
This is a required course for the undergraduate double degree program with the Gustavson School, University of Victoria.
Course schedule and content is subject to change (all changes/modifications will be posted on Canvas and announced in class). Students are expected to check Canvas and their Rikkyo email account on a regular basis for announcements.
