The economic share of agriculture has been shrinking with economic development, however, it continues to play an important role such as food supply. The economic characteristics of agriculture are determined by the production factor of land and traditional management by the majority of family farms. In addition, agricultural product and food markets are unstable and have theoretically unique characteristics compared to other commodity markets. The goal of this class is to understand such characteristics of agriculture from an economic perspective. It also aims to provide a broad understanding of the current state of agriculture both in Japan and other countries, as well as to acquire a perspective on the food system from farm to table.
This course will explain the current state of agricultural product market, supply and demand, and the economic theory of agricultural protection policy. It will also cover the particular issues such as agricultural management and the issue of agricultural workers, the availability and maintenance of productive resources such as farmland, water, and environmental conservation. It will also cover changes in food market structure due to developments in the food industry and changes in consumer behavior, as well as food safety issues, from a food system perspective.

農業は，経済発展にともない生産額シェアが縮小傾向にあるが，国民への食料供給という重要な役割を果たしている。そもそも農業の経済学的にみた特徴は，土地という生産要素や，大多数を占める農家による伝統的な経営管理によって規定されてきた。また農産物市場は不安定で，他の一般商品市場とは理論的にも固有の特徴を有している。本授業の目標は，このような農業の特徴を経済学的な視点から理解できるようにすることである。また国内外の農業の現状を幅広く把握し，生産から消費までのフードシステムという視点を身につけることである。

世界の農業と食料問題の概況をふまえて，農産物の需要・供給の現状，農産物市場・国際貿易の特質、農業保護の経済理論などを説明する。また経済発展と農業の関係，各論としては農業経営と担い手問題，農地等の生産資源の賦存状況と維持管理、環境保全等の課題について講義する。食品産業の発展や消費行動の変化にともなう食品市場構造の変化，食品安全の課題についてもフードシステム学的視点から講義する｡
