The objective of Civil Law 1 is to understand the basic knowledge and concepts of Civil Law. Civil Law prescribes the rules for dealing with property and family issues among citizens. And Civil Law is the general law of private law and provides the foundation for studying other fields of law including Consumer Contract Act and Commercial Law. Studying Civil Law makes it possible to avoid contractual troubles that occurs during transactions and economic activities and family troubles in real society and gives students the basic legal thinking ability for dealing with such issues. Specifically, to understand the structure of Civil Law and understand the basic legal system of contract, person, juridical persons, juristic act, agent, debt default, relatives, and inheritance.
An overview of property law and family law is presented from the perspective of acquiring the basic legal thinking ability necessary to avoid and deal with contractual troubles that occurs during transactions and economic activities and family troubles in real society. For property law the class mainly covers contracts (real estate sales agreements), but also discusses the adult guardianship system and the agency and registration systems. For family law the class discusses the basics of relatives and inheritance. The lecture will follow the text. Legal precedents and familiar news will be looked at from time to time. Civil Law 1 covers the basics of Civil Law while Civil Law 2 discusses the application of Civil Law including special laws.

民法１では、民法の基本的な知識、考え方を理解することを目標とする。民法は、市民間の財産・家族の問題に対処するためのルールを規定している。そして民法は、私法の一般法として、消費者契約法や商法など他の法律を学ぶ際の基礎ともなるものである。民法を学ぶことを通じて、実社会における取引や経済活動から生じる契約上のトラブルや家族間のトラブルなどを防止したり、それらに対処したりするための基本的な法的思考力を習得する。具体的には、民法の構造を把握し、契約、人、法人、法律行為、代理、債務不履行、親族、相続といった基本的な法制度を理解する。

社会における取引や経済活動から生じる契約上のトラブルや家族間のトラブルなどを防止したり、それらに対処したりするための基本的な法的思考力を習得するという観点から、財産法と家族法を概観する。財産法では、契約（不動産売買契約）を主に取り上げるが、成年後見制度や代理、登記制度にも言及する。家族法では、親族や相続について基本的な説明をする。テキストに沿って講義をする。判例や身近なニュースも随時取り上げる。民法１は民法の基本、民法２は特別法も含めた民法の応用という位置付けである。
