【Course Objectives】

[Knowledge] Students will acquire knowledge of major economic events in Japanese history, including its distinctive characteristics and features shared with other economies and its influence on contemporary Japan.
[Critical thinking skills] Students will develop critical thinking skills by using historical cases.
[Presentation and discussion skills] Students will enhance their presentation skills and the ability to engage in constructive debates.

【Course Contents】

Content includes lectures, discussions, in-class group activities, and short assignments. Students will work on a project (an essay or presentation) on the topic of their choice.“Japanese Economic History 1” covers the Edo and the Meiji periods, and “Japanese Economic History 2” covers the Taisho and Showa periods up to the 1950s. The order of weekly topics may be changed to maximize the learning outcome.
