[Knowledge] Students will acquire knowledge of major economic events in Japanese history, including its characteristics and features shared with other economies, and the influence of history on contemporary Japan.
[Critical Thinking Skills] Students will develop critical thinking skills through the analysis of historical cases.
[Discussion Skills] Students will improve their ability to engage in constructive debate.
Content includes lectures, discussions, group activities, and short assignments. "Japanese Economic History 1 covers the Edo and Meiji periods, and Japanese Economic History 2 covers the Taisho and Showa periods through the 1950s. The order of weekly topics may be changed to maximize the learning experience.

Students should be familiar with the basics of academic essay writing, including referencing techniques. Examinations will be in essay format.
