Through dialog with journalists and movies that deal with journalism, I help students to understand the role and historical change of the press, the current challenges, and to develop the ability to think independently about journalism, rather than just criticizing.
When you hear the terms "press" or "mass media," do you think of them as troublesome entities that exploit other people's misfortunes or only write things that are convenient for those in power? Journalism originally has the essential role in democracy of serving people's "right to know”. Through new and old movies, students study how the journalism support democratic societies, and also through communication with reporters and editors, they discuss current issues and what should be.

ジャーナリストとの対話やジャーナリズムを扱った映画を通し、報道の役割と歴史的な変遷、現在の課題を理解し、単に批判するだけなく、どんな報道が必要かを自分で考えられる力をつける。

「報道」とか「マスメディア」と聞くと、他人の不幸を書き立てる迷惑な存在、とか、権力側に都合の良いことしか書かない存在、と思っていないでしょうか？ジャーナリズムは本来、人びとの「知る権利」のために奉仕するという、民主主義に欠かせない役割をもっています。新旧の映画を通して、社会をささえる報道のしくみを学ぶとともに、現役記者らと「今起きていること」についての対話も交えて、現在の課題やよりよいあり方を議論します。
