Notes

【Course Objectives】

This course explores the changes in the international monetary order that underpins global trade and finance.

【Course Contents】

We start with a history of the current international monetary system, which is dominated by the United States, from its establishment in 1944 at Bretton Woods, followed by its breakdown and replacement by Bretton Woods II and the petrodollar system. We observe the recent stresses to this system resulting from sanctions and expropriation of assets of adversaries of the United States. We follow the current attempts by BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) countries to develop an alternative international monetary order to bypass this US led international monetary order, and reduce reliance on the US dollar as the global reserve and trading currency. We conclude by asking if we are witnessing a transitioning of the global order from a US-led unipolar world to a multi-polar world.
