【Course Objectives】

This seminar aims to analyze economic issues facing Japan and other countries using macroeconomic fundamental theory and economic statistics, while developing the ability to explain the results logically. To achieve this, we set the following learning objectives for students upon completion of the course:
(1) Explain basic macroeconomic concepts and theories related to economic growth, prices, employment, fiscal policy, monetary policy, and international economic relations.
(2) For real-world economic issues, organize the current situation and underlying factors using literature and statistical data, then examine causes, effects, and policy responses based on macroeconomic theory.
(3) Formulate questions regarding economic issues, construct arguments and conclusions based on evidence, and present these logically and clearly through reports, papers, and presentations.

【Course Contents】

This seminar covers the fundamental theories of macroeconomics and applies these theories to analyze real-world economic issues. The primary focus areas include economic growth, inflation, employment, fiscal policy, monetary policy, exchange rates, international trade, and demographic trends—all of which pertain to both Japan and the global economy.
In the first half of the course, students will study the core concepts, theoretical models, underlying assumptions, and policy implications of macroeconomics through group readings and presentations. In addition to summarizing assigned sections, participants will explain the theories' logical structure and their relevance to actual economic phenomena, engaging in discussion based on this analysis.
In the second half of the course, students will independently or in groups select specific real-world economic issues and develop research questions. They will then collect relevant literature and statistical data from official sources and analyze them using macroeconomic theory. The findings will be compiled into reports or academic papers and presented orally. Following the presentations, participants will revise their work based on feedback from questions and critiques.
Through this process, students will learn to systematically examine economic problems using theoretical frameworks, academic literature, and empirical data as substantive evidence.
