【Course Objectives】

This course aims to consider roles of food, agriculture and rural areas in the capitalist economy from various perspectives such as theories, history, current situation and policies.

【Course Contents】

In fiscal year 2024, agriculture accounted for only 0.8% of Japan’s GDP. However, we can simply understand that agriculture is an important industry. There are various reasons for this: agriculture produces the food necessary to sustain human life; regional economies depend on agriculture and related industries; and ensuring food security is essential for the nation’s survival.
In this seminar, we will examine the role of agriculture in the capitalist economy in which we live through group reading of texts and group research. During the group reading sessions, students will develop logical thinking skills and the ability to express themselves clearly through presentations and discussions. In the group research projects, students will take the lead in selecting themes and acquire deeper analytical skills through methods such as fieldwork. The final goal of the group research is to produce a report and a presentation.
Seminar activities are student-led. Students also take the lead in coordinating with one another and in planning, organizing, and conducting fieldwork. Through these experiences, students will develop the skills necessary to manage an organization.
