The purpose of this seminar is understanding and anlysing the models of economic development of Europe and Japan from the comparative and historical perspective.
This seminar explores the characteristics of economic development in Europe and Japan, examining both similarities and differences, with a particular emphasis on historical approaches. Research may also extend to the Americas (United States, Canada, and Latin America).
From the academic year after next, the seminar will focus on the themes of “Distribution (Retailing) and Consumption” and “Regional Industrial History.”
The seminar welcomes students with a strong interest in Europe, those who wish to study the Japanese economy from a perspective of international comparison, and those who enjoy history. In addition to general sessions, substantial time will be devoted to group research.
In all themes, historical approaches will be applied, at least in part.
No prior knowledge of history is required at the time of joining the seminar, but genuine interest and motivation are essential.
Group-based fieldwork is emphasized. In past years, activities have included visits to wineries in Yamanashi Prefecture, interviews with shipbuilding companies, tours of Yokohama Port, and surveys on beer consumption.
Students are encouraged to collect information from foreign-language sources as much as possible.

ヨーロッパと日本では，経済発展の仕方にどのような特徴があり，似ている部分や異なる部分はどのようなところにあるのか，とくに歴史的なアプローチから研究し，明らかにします。アメリカ地域（合衆国，カナダ，中南米）を対象にすることも可能です。
＊再来年度からは，「流通（小売り）と消費」と「地域の産業史」をテーマに設定します。
ヨーロッパに強い関心がある人，国際比較の目線で日本の経済を考えたい人，歴史が好きな人などに参加してもらいたいと思います。
全体演習に加えて，グループ研究の時間を多くとります。
＊いずれのテーマでも，歴史的なアプローチを（部分的にでも）行います。
＊ゼミ加入の段階で歴史の予備知識はなくても大丈夫ですが，興味と意欲をもって勉強できることが必須です。
＊グループ単位のフィールドワークを重視します。これまでは，山梨県のワイン醸造所訪問，造船企業へのインタビュー，横浜港の見学，ビール消費に関するアンケート調査などを行いました。
＊外国語による情報収集をできる限り行います。
