Through research on Europe, Canada, and Australia, students will:
understand their business and industrial ties with Japan;
develop a multidimensional understanding of these countries and regions, including their societies, cultures, and histories;
develop skills in data analysis, research, and presentation;
develop the ability to conduct research using English-language sources.
Europe, Canada, and Australia are important countries and regions with which Japan should further develop its relations in the years ahead, and they have attracted increasing attention in recent years. Amid growing uncertainty and instability in international affairs, Japan increasingly needs to strengthen cooperation with reliable partners without becoming overly dependent on any particular major power. In this context, these countries and regions share many fundamental values with Japan and offer the prospect of stable and constructive partnerships. They also have considerable potential for mutually beneficial development in areas such as natural resources, technology, innovation, and corporate competitiveness.
With the concept of “Europe, Canada, and Australia as economic and business partners” in mind, students in this seminar will study and conduct research mainly on a country or region in which they have a particular interest. To do so, it is essential to develop a deep understanding of the country or region concerned. While particular attention will be paid to the economy, industries, and businesses, students will also examine society, culture, and other relevant aspects.
Students who are interested may also take a historical approach, including economic history, industrial history, business history, social history, and cultural history. Through these activities, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of their chosen country or region and strengthen their analytical skills. In the field of history, students who are particularly motivated and interested can receive guidance in advanced academic research, including preparation for further study and a possible career in research.
Students will form groups according to the country or region they wish to study and work collaboratively on various assignments and research projects. The aim is for each student to acquire in-depth knowledge of their chosen country or region and develop the ability to analyze it from multiple perspectives.
