This is a required first-year course for all students admitted to the College of Environmental Studies, and has two goals:
1) Students will immerse themselves in local communities as the "front lines" of initiatives addressing environmental challenges and building a sustainable society, use their five senses, reflect on how the knowledge and skills acquired through the other courses connect to the realities, and gain a multifaceted understanding of the essence of environmental issues and the meaning of "environmental justice."
2) Students will meet with diverse stakeholders and experts from different fields and explore “dialogue” and "collaboration" as essential elements for transforming society toward a sustainable future.
This course, offered as a first-year required subject, provides opportunities to learn from local communities as the “front lines” of environmental challenges and initiatives.
Students learn how knowledge and perspectives from various academic disciplines relate to each other by examining real-world issues and local natural environments. The goal is to connect knowledge with actual experiences through preparatory study, a field visit, and follow-up study. During preparatory study, faculty members in charge of each course and/or guest speakers introduce local issues and related basic knowledge, and students deepen their insights through discussions. This is followed by a field visit lasting several days or multiple sessions. In the field visit, students visit the site of the local environmental issue, observe actual efforts being made, and aim to understand the essence of the problem from multiple perspectives. Finally, as a follow-up learning activity, students present what they have learned at a reporting session.

本科目では、学生が９つのチーム（20～25名程度）に分かれ、文理をまたぐ異なる専門性を持つ複数の教員の指導のもと、全国９地域をそれぞれ訪問する。訪問地域・チーム編成は、各学生の希望にもとづき全体のバランスを調整のうえ、決定する。
各地域の訪問日程、テーマ・活動内容、担当教員、費用などの詳細については、事前配布資料・ガイダンス時の説明をよく確認すること。
環境学部に入学した学生全員が参加する初年次必修科目として、以下２点を目標とする。
１）さまざまな環境課題や持続可能な社会づくりにつながる取り組みの「現場」としての地域に身を置き、五感を磨きながら、講義・実習で身に着けた知識やスキルとの接点について考え、問題の本質と「環境正義」の意味を多角的に理解する。
２）様々な関係者や異なる分野の専門家と出会い、持続可能な未来へ向けた社会への変革に不可欠な「対話」と「協働」について考える。

1年次必修科目として、環境課題や取組の「現場」としての地域から学ぶ科目である。この授業では、実際の地域課題や現地の自然環境を題材として、様々な学問分野の知識や視点がどのように関連しているかを学ぶ。事前学習、現場実習、事後学習を通して、知識と実際の体験とを関連づけることを目標とする。事前学習においては、担当教員やゲスト等による地域の課題や関連する基礎知識の導入を行い、グループディスカッションを通じて議論を重ねることで知見を深めた後、数日間、もしくは複数回の現場実習を行う。現場実習においては、その地域の環境課題の現場を訪れ、実際の取り組みを見学し、問題の本質を多角的な視点に基づいて理解することを目的とする。最終的に事後学習として、学生達が学んだことをプレゼンテーションする報告会を行う。
